Willpower Depletion
The tendency for effort-based self-control to run out precisely when demands are highest, causing discipline systems to fail on schedule.
Willpower depletion is why discipline-first approaches tend to work for a short window and then collapse. Effort is a consumable resource, and it's lowest under exactly the stress that most tests a new habit.
Identity-based change sidesteps depletion by removing the need for continuous effort: when behaviour is an output of self-image, it no longer draws down a finite willpower budget.
