The Stories You Tell About Yourself

Self-talk isn't noise. It's the running commentary that keeps an identity in place. Edit the commentary, edit the identity.

Language builds identity

'I'm not a morning person.' 'I always start things and never finish.' These sound like descriptions. They're actually instructions. Every time you say them, you reinforce the identity that produces the very behaviour you're complaining about.

Editing the narration

You don't fix this with forced positivity. You fix it by noticing the identity claims hidden in your self-talk and refusing to keep signing them. The book treats language as a lever: change what you repeatedly say about who you are, and you change what the loop confirms.
