How to Shed an Old Identity Without a Crisis

You don't have to hit rock bottom to change who you are. You have to stop confirming the old story.

The myth of the breaking point

Culture tells us people only change after a collapse — the health scare, the rock bottom, the dramatic turn. It makes for good stories, but it's a poor strategy, because it puts change on hold until catastrophe arrives.

Identities don't actually require a crisis to shift. They require a change in the evidence they're fed. Stop supplying the old identity with confirmation, start supplying the new one, and the balance tips without any disaster.

Expect resistance, and read it correctly

When you act against an old identity, it pushes back. That discomfort is easy to misread as 'this isn't working' or 'this isn't me.' In fact it's the opposite — it's the sensation of an old self-image losing its grip. Naming the resistance for what it is takes most of its power away.
