The ENGINE Method, Explained
A six-stage protocol for installing a new identity — the practical core of the book.
Why a method at all
Insight alone rarely changes anyone. 'Identity drives behaviour' is a useful idea, but an idea isn't a procedure. The ENGINE Method exists to turn the principle into steps you can actually run.
Each letter is a stage with a concrete output, which is what lets you make progress on days when you don't feel motivated — because the method doesn't depend on feeling motivated.
The six stages
Excavate: surface the self-image currently running underneath your behaviour. Name: define, precisely, the person you're choosing to become. Ground: gather small, real actions as evidence the new identity is already true.
Install: build self-reinforcing loops so behaviour stops depending on mood. Neutralise: recognise and move through the resistance the old identity throws up. Embody: continue until the new identity stops feeling like effort and simply becomes who you are.
The point where discipline disappears
The method is finished not when you're trying hard, but when you've stopped needing to. Embodiment is the stage where the behaviour becomes invisible — no longer a decision, just a description of who you are.
This idea is one thread. The full method is in Identity Over Discipline.
